This abridged dissertation chapter connects Buster Keaton’s
interest in automatism and automata to theoretical accounts of
photographic automatism and film realism. By reading Keaton’s films
alongside the work of Andre Bazin and Stanley Cavell, argue that
Sherlock Jr. (1924) and The Cameraman (1928) articulate a relation
between the ethical and ontological registers of the film medium.
